Registry vs. registrar
A registry runs a TLD — it keeps the database of every name under it, like Verisign for .com. A registrar is the company you buy a domain from; it sends your registration to the registry. For gTLDs, registrars are accredited by ICANN.
You almost never deal with a registry directly. Registrars compete on price, support and extras, but they all pay the registry a wholesale fee for each name. For ccTLDs, the registry (often called the ccTLD manager) decides whether to sell through registrars or directly.
