Top-level domains, quickly explained
How many top-level domains are there?
As of our latest refresh of IANA's Root Zone Database there are 1,437 active TLDs: 1,127 generic TLDs (including 366 brand TLDs) and 309 country-code TLDs. 151 of them are written in non-Latin scripts.
Full breakdown and chart →What's the difference between a ccTLD and a gTLD?
A country-code TLD (ccTLD) is a two-letter ending tied to a country or territory, like .de for Germany, and its rules are set locally. A generic TLD (gTLD) — .com, .org, .app, .pizza — is run by a registry under contract with ICANN and is not tied to a place.
More in the glossary →Who decides which TLDs exist?
IANA maintains the DNS root zone. ccTLDs follow the ISO 3166-1 country code list; new gTLDs come through ICANN's application program, most of them from the 2012 round.
What is a "domain hack"?
Using a TLD for what its letters spell rather than where it belongs — .io for "input/output", .tv for television, .ly to finish an adverb. The domain still belongs to its country, which sets the rules and collects the fees.
tldplay is an independent guide. Data comes from IANA and ICANN — see our methodology.
